What is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a cancer that starts in the colon or the rectum. This type of cancer is also named colon cancer or rectal cancer depending on where it occurs. Cancer starts when cells in the body begin to grow out of control. Colorectal cancers begin as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum called a polyp. Some types of polyps can change into cancer, but not all polyps become cancer. If left untreated, these cancers grow and eventually spread through the colon wall to involve the adjacent lymph nodes and organs.
